F/O Fairfield’s family sent me a group of photos from his small wartime collection this week and when I saw the 2 CFF Hurricane photos.

I went to work the other day/night scanning through 129’s diary and I see Harold Fairfield flew Hurricane 2-T once according to the logs and it stopped flying at the end of November 1942, then re-appears in February on a “test” flight. So is that last flight in November when it nosed over? The ORB mentions nothing about why it stopped and in March 1943 the ORB only logs serial numbers and not Sqd codes. I pressed on and in I knew 5667 was an accident listed and moved into the summer months and found this:

July 28th, 1943 No. 129 Squadron RCAF Labrador Microfilm Reel: C-12254

Hurricane XIIB no. 5667 nosed over as result of sudden gust of wind (35-40 mph). This accident which took place while the aircraft was being taxied to the hanger was classified “D” crash. Only damage to the prop. The pilot R.114163 F/Sgt Ormond Knox Morgan* of Hamilton, Ontario was uninjured.

This pilot was sadly killed in Hurricane 5662 a few months later on Sept 11, 1943 -The a/c crashed at Carter Basin, east of the airfield and wreckage was not recovered/CASPIR

July 28th, 1943 RCAF Station Goose Bay, Labrador Microfilm Reel C-12188

Cloudy with High Winds. Winds reached a velocity of 45mph and in the am causing sand storms and caused Hurricane 5667 to be blown off runway whilst taxing sending it upon it’s nose. Only damage was slightly bent prop and no injury to pilot.

I haven’t looked into how this Hurricane out on the East coast ended up on a farm in Alberta post-war…

Hurricane and even Spitfire photos of them on the Cdn Victory Bond Drive but never seem to any of Hurricane 5667.

Hope this finds its way into 5667’s history.
